Symmetry superposition studied by surface second-harmonic generation.

چکیده
The components of a third-rank g' ' tensor have been split into contributions due to 1-fold, 2fold, 3-fold, and (x}-fold or isotropic rotation axes for a surface of C, symmetry. Theoretical analysis of the rotation patterns obtained by the surface second-harmonic (SH) generation indicates that a complete symmetry analysis cannot be performed without knowledge of the relevant distribution functions. Rotation axes of lower symmetry create via "overtones" or "harmonics" contributions apparent in the analysis of the rotation axes of higher symmetry. An experimental example is the observation of structural changes of Au(111) surfaces in an aqueous electrolytic environment. Potential-dependent buildup and removal of a Au(111)-(1X 23) surface could be monitored in situ

An in Situ Study of Reconstructed Gold Electrode Surfaces by Second Harmonic Generation
Second harmonic generation (SHG) was employed to monitor in situ the potential-induced reconstruction of Au( 111) and Au( 100) electrodes. Rotating the sample by 360” about the surface normal yields for the unreconstructed Au( 1 I1 )-( 1 x 1) SWface the well-known threefold symmetry pattern in the SHG intensity, while Au( lOO)(1 X 1) shows no rotational anisotropy, as expected for C, symmetry. ...
متن کاملOptimized Surfaces for Second Harmonic Generation from Surface-Plasmon Polaritons: Theory and Experiment
In connection with recent theoretical predictions, enhancement of optical second harmonic generation (SHG) by diffractive coupling to the silver surface-plasmon polariton (SPP) mode is shown experimentally to be maximized on a biperiodic corrugated surface. Optimized first-order diffractive coupling of incident radiation to the SPP maximizes resonance enhancement of the surface-localized electr...
متن کاملSymmetry-selective third-harmonic generation from plasmonic metacrystals.
Nonlinear processes are often governed by selection rules imposed by the symmetries of the molecular configurations. The most well-known examples include the role of centrosymmetry breaking for the generation of even harmonics, and the selection rule related to the rotational symmetry in harmonic generation for fundamental beams with circular polarizations. While the role of centrosymmetry brea...
متن کاملSurface phase transition of ordered iodine monolayers on a Pt( 111) electrode as studied by normal incidence optical second harmonic generation
The spectroscopic study of electrochemical surfaces provides the modern electrochemist with the detailed information required for the interpretation of charge transfer processes at solution/ electrode interfaces. Fundamental surface reactions such as catalytic oxidation and thin film growth can depend critically upon the local adsorbate structure at the electrode surface. This adsorbate structu...
متن کاملGalerkin Finite-Element Method for the Analysis of the Second Harmonic Generation in Wagon Wheel Fibers
The nonlinear effects of the second harmonic generation have been investigated for the propagation of light along the axis of fibers of wagon wheel cross sectional shape. Nodal finite element formulation is utilized to obtain discretized Helmholtz equations under appropriate boundary conditions. The hierarchical p-version nodal elements are used for meshing the cross section of wagon wheel fibe...
